Anfield line up Upton Park raid?
Italian source CalcioMercato are reporting that West Ham forward Carlton Cole is set for an Upton Park exit in January and suggest that Liverpool could well be in the running to sign the England international.
Whilst it’s true that Brendan Rodgers does not have an extensive supply of striking options a move to sign the 28 year old Hammers man is a little hard to swallow, however it is true that the Anfield side have been consistently linked with interest in the hard working, if hardly prolific, forward over the years.
In the summer of 2010 the Daily Mail stated that Roy Hodgson was close to bringing the Upton Park man to Merseyside and the Metro also felt such a deal was on the cards.
Cole netted 17 goals last term to help West Ham to achieve promotion back to the top tier but has failed to complete a 90 minute run out this term and is yet to find the back of the net. This may have led to speculation that Sam Allardyce wants to sell the striker.
Allardyce brought in Modibo Maiga from Sochaux and signed Liverpool forward Andy Carroll on a loan deal over the summer, moves that could well indicate his desire to seek other attacking options.
However a move to take Carlton Cole to Liverpool seems highly unlikely, not least because one of the reasons Brendan Rodgers opted to offload Carroll was that he didn’t fit with his style of play and one would imagine such an assertion would be equally true of the big West Ham marksman.
Carlton Cole has netted 57 goals during his six years at West Ham in 213 appearances for the East London side.
