West Ham v Wigan ClubLogoWest Ham United FC v Wigan West Ham v Wigan ClubLogo

    Capital One Cup third round
Venue: Upton Park Date: Tuesday, 25 September

Coverage: Watch highlights on The League Cup Show on BBC One on Wednesday 26 September at 2315 BST

    TEAM NEWS

West Ham have no new injury concerns but are still without on-loan Liverpool striker Andy Carroll (hamstring) and Jack Collison (knee).

Yossi Benayoun could make his first start since returning on loan and striker Modibo Maiga could also start.

Wigan are likely to give some of their younger players the chance to impress.

Substitutes Callum McManaman and Ryo Miyaichi performed well in the weekend defeat to Fulham and could be both handed starts.
    MATCH PREVIEW

Home advantage should give West Ham a big advantage, especially as the Hammers are unbeaten at home this season, and have won all but two of the last 13 League Cup matches staged at Upton Park.

If we want to get positive results, we need more concentration and intensity in defence when we're on top of the game

    Wigan manager Roberto Martinez

Sam Allardyce is likely to rest some of his squad but will be aware of the importance of keeping up a winning momentum, especially with Arsenal and Manchester City among the next trio of visitors to east London.

Like West Ham, the League Cup is likely to be Wigan's best hope of silverware this season, and the Latics have a good record in the competition in recent years, reaching the final in 2006, and the last eight two years later.

But they have lost on the last four occasions they have drawn fellow Premier League opposition in this competition, and come into the fixture on the back of two league defeats.
    MATCH FACTS
    Head-to-head
West Ham are unbeaten in their last four home meetings with Wigan, winning three of them.
The teams have never met in the League Cup before, but the Hammers have won both of the previous FA Cup fixtures that the pair have played.
    West Ham
West Ham have never won the League Cup, but were losing finalists to West Brom in 1966, and to Liverpool in 1981.
The Hammers have failed to score in only one of their last 17 League Cup outings.
West Ham are playing a Premier League club for the sixth time in eight League Cup ties, and chasing a fifth win.
    Wigan
Wigan are attempting to reach the fourth round for the third time in five years.
The Latics have lost on the last four occasions they have drawn fellow Premier League opposition in this competition.
Wigan have won three and lost seven of their last 10 League Cup matches away from home.

    From the Offish

Team news-wise, manager Sam Allardyce is expected to make changes to the starting XI from Saturday's 1-1 draw with Sunderland. Three players who will definitely miss out are the injured Andy Carroll and Jack Collison and Yossi Benayoun, who has been given permission to miss the game as it falls on the Jewish holy day of Yom Kippur. Fresh from their 4-1 Barclays U21 Premier League win over Arsenal on Friday, Development Squad players Rob Hall, Dan Potts, George Moncur, Matthias Fanimo, Sebastian Lletget, Dylan Tombides, Paul McCallum, Callum Driver and Leo Chambers have all been included in a 21-man squad.

I`am hoping that BFS plays a weak team full of young players with one or two older players like O`Neil and Diarra etc .

We dont want to risk picking up any bad injuries via this annoying pointles Cup Evil or Very Mad If it was the FA Cup then it`s a diferent story Smile

And a straight 442. Wonder how the players will cope in a strange formation? Hope Spence plays better than he did against Brain tree!

Surprised Yossie is not even on the bench. I'd have thought they'd want to give him some pitch time...

ETA - just discovered it's Yom Kippur this evening until tomorrow evening which is why he's not involved.

I prefer the team to do well in any tournament they enter, this because it get's them into a winning mind-set. I don't agree that losing is OK just because it's the League Cup. I want them to win every match regardless.

If this is a demonstration of our defensive strength in depth, then it's going to be a long , hard season, that's for sure Sad

Son No 1 and his crew have gone to this game. They asked me but I can't be bother to go to early league cup games because we always play crap.
This only goes to show we have not got a lot of talent in depth.

And my point has been made : Noble went of with a slight injury and gary O`Neil has gone off with a bad injury ... This is why this cup is pointless IMO angry2
