In the battle of the Claret and Blue sides, it is the home team most urgently in need of points in front of the Sky Sports cameras at Villa Park.

A run of eight games without a win has seen the Premier League perennials plummet into the drop zone.

Only Queens Park Rangers sit below Villa in the table and, with pressure mounting on manager Paul Lambert, three points against dodgy travellers West Ham are surely a must.

The Hammers haven't won away from Upton Park since mid-November but six home wins have helped ensure that Sam Allardyce's side are nine points clear of their hosts going into this one.

Despite their questionable form, both these sides enjoyed encouraging results at the weekend.

West Ham produced a gritty display to see off Swansea at the Boleyn Ground, while Villa drew 3-3 in an entertaining contest at Everton.

But it is the manner of that draw - after conceding yet another late goal - that will concern Villa supporters.

Their fragile team will need to be strong both mentally and physically against Allardyce's robust outfit in what could be a significant afternoon in establishing Villa's survival credentials.

Aston Villa v West Ham United FC 238 Aston Villa
Villa midfielder Fabian Delph has recovered from an ankle injury after a two-game absence and is included in the squad.

Karim El Ahmadi has also shaken off a knock to the knee sustained in the draw at Everton last weekend.

Villa boss Paul Lambert will run a fitness check over a third midfielder in Ashley Westwood, who is currently suffering from illness, but defender Richard Dunne is still out with a groin problem.

Aston Villa v West Ham United FC 367 West Ham United FC

Sam Allardyce has no fresh injury concerns ahead of his side's trip to face Villa and is able to welcome Modibo Maiga back to the squad.

The forward has returned to the club following Mali's exit from the Africa Cup of Nations but is unlikely to feature.

Defensive duo James Collins (hamstring) and George McCartney (knee) are still out but all of the Hammers players on international duty returned from their midweek exertions unscathed.

    Facts

    • Aston Villa have recovered fewer points than any other team from matches they have been trailing this season (two).

    • Paul Lambert's side are on a run of nine Premier League games without a clean sheet; only Fulham (11 games) are on a longer current run in the PL.

    • The Hammers have taken just one point from the last 21 available on the road and scored just five goals in their last nine games away from home in the Premier League.

just watched MOTD and thought Villa looked ok vs Everton. Our defence at least will certainly have to be on their game against benteke. They also compared Carroll to 'Big Dunc' of Everton lol

    We are West Ham so.......

We will gift a side on a poor run their first win in ages

Give a side who cannot keep a clean sheet their first clean sheet in ages

We will allow an opposing player to score his first/only goal of the season against us

We will allow a player who is an a barren goalscoring run to break that run against us

We will play like we only have to turn up to win

Been over to a Villa site to see how they are predicting the game , heres a few comments

    JustRich

Must win. Simple as. People keep saying were down but were not until its mathematically impossible to stay up. Win this and we could climb out the zone

    Jayemdubbya

Sucks to lose 6 points after blowing leads against Swansea, WBA, and Everton, but all three of those clubs are top 10. We cant afford another let down.

    JustRich

Also...wet spam, arsenal, man city, reading, qpr coming up. Absolutely 100% unequivocallly we CANNOT lose to reading or qpr.

9 points from them games (beating wet spam, reading and qpr.)

    Villa9824

We will be in the game and score goals, but TBH our defence, have to sort it out,, I think finally lambert has his final 11,

That attack yesterday is how we must roll for rest of the season no chopping and changing, no place for bent, he should have gone this month to raise funds for CB,,

I fancy is to win 3-1 after yesterday attacking performance,,,

    Skyba

I think we can win this one!!

We look like we have a bit of bite as long as the likes of Barry bannan and kea never step foot on the pitch again we'll be ok.

Kea was like a wet flannel yesterday, when he should have been throwing himself in for the cause he was walking around and watching Everton score, or wafting a leg in the general direction of an Everton player with the effort of an anaemic camel!!

    Villanation

On the optimistic view of things, we are actually getting a momentum, if you think about the 2nd half v Newcastle, then look at the Everton game, its reasonable to say we are on the cusp of winning a game, I think that's reasonable, so, West Ham, at home, I think this is a win win situation, this is where we will make the break through, I'm going for 3-0 to us.......

Overall, the situation we are in is that we need 4 probably 5 wins to be safe, say that because the threshold for points safety is usually set lower when all teams in the lower 6 or 7 are losing and bumping along trying to get points, when you have the bottom teams getting points on the board from games the threshold can be set as high as 38 to 41 points for safety and that is what seems to be happening.

I just don't see where we are going to get this from unless we go on a remarkable run.

    Anything is possible.

    Aza

We basically need 19 points from 13 games if the golden 40 mark is to be reached but i feel that 36 will keep you up this year. meaning 15 points are needed with 4 winnable games at home thats 12 another odd ball win hopefully or three of four draws. We just need some momentum which i feel we are very close to getting. Three points a must Sunday and also Reading and QPR three as well then its another one or two wins. I know its a big ask Villa but these are games we can get something out of and also drag some of the teams that think they are safe back in to the mix. if the Baggies keep loosing like they are they will soon enough find themselves back in the familiar position fighting to stay up as they have some very tough games coming up.

    dorset lion

As has already been said this is a must win game, the 4th in just over a month and we lost the other 3. But the games are running out it's now or never. Keeping nolan and carrol quiet is the first job, do that and we should win if we play as we have showed we can.

    HIPHOPPER

We are due a win, period, be it home or away.

Form is looking good, the last 135 minutes anyhow, and its time to put the january blues to rest.

We need a hell of an effort from vlaar and co at the back, I hope lambo has heeded the call from teale cause thats the only way I see us being organised enough to not concede before then.

Get sylla on from the start to nulify the likes of nolan and cole

    hisnhers

A Villa win for this one, 3-2, Benteke, Agbonlahor, Weimann to score.

We are pretty even on form at the moment, but a worry is that their goals have come from all over the park, whereas ours are mainly through Benteke, Weimann and Agbonlahor.

Can the defence tighten up? We do that, we're clear of the bottom for sure come May. Easier said than done though.

I do like Clarke, under AM he actually scored a few goals even, but I don't think he's scored much this season. His defensive qualities are a bit lacking ATM, but I do believe he will come good. Villa seem to be playing a zonal defence, rather than a man-on-man defence, is it just the camera angles? What do people on the ground think?

    degernier

After 25 games last season we had 28 points rather than this seasons disappointing 21. At this stage last season the teams on 21 points were Wolves and Blackburn and we all know how it ended for them! 3 points against West Ham is an absolute necessity, if we fail to win were are going to see a gap opening up above the bottom 3 and I fear we will be travelling to Blackpool, Brighton and Charlton next season. Come on the Villa, time to man up!

If the Villa team are as hungry as their fans we will be right in it, and Tony P's comments are very sadly true to form for us. Fat Sam has to make sure we well fit and motivated for this one. We have lost to too many manky sides already this season.

Start with Jarvis on the wing and Carroll up front and hope Jarvis can get as many crosses into the box as he did against QPR. Simples.

I must say that I take no great joy from seeing Villa deep in the shit, unlike Fernandes' Parkkeepers for instance. However, I'm more than willing to stand on their heads if it gets us closer to safety. Surely it's about time we gave someone a good mauling, and Carroll versus the worst central defence in the Prem has to be as good an opportunity as we will get!
    So, probably 0-0 then..... scarf

Big Guilty Secret:- Am I the only person that dreams about Defoe playing alongside Carroll??? For us, that is...

One to watch omorrow says Sam

Aston Villa v West Ham United FC 3230992582

West Ham manager Sam Allardyce will be wary of the threat posed by Christian Benteke when the Hammers travel to face Aston Villa in the Premier League tomorrow.

Villa currently sit 19th in the table and have struggled so far this season, also falling out of the Capital One Cup and FA Cup to lower league opposition.

One shining light for Paul Lambert’s side has been summer acquisition Benteke who joined from Genk for a reported £7million fee.

The 22-year-old has already scored 10 league goals for Villa this campaign and Allardyce is aware that he poses the main threat to his West Ham side, who are looking to build on last weekend’s win over Swansea.

“He’s the biggest threat,” Allardyce said of Benteke.

“He’s the man who scores the goals for Aston Villa on a regular basis, he’s the focal point for their attacks in that he not only scores goals, but he holds the ball up, he’s strong.

“He’s had a fantastic start in what must have been a very disappointing season so far for Aston Villa.

“It says a lot for what he is as a player when he’s producing what he is in a team that’s been struggling for results.”

Lambert took over at Villa Park last year and has overseen a large turnover in playing staff and now has a very young, inexperienced squad under his guidance.

Allardyce reckons it is vital for Villa’s survival chances that the few experienced players they do possess need to play at their best.

“There is nothing wrong with the effort and will to try and win at Aston Villa,” he said.

“I think what has cost them on occasions is the lapse in concentration at certain times, probably due to the inexperience of the team but you can see that Paul has introduced more experienced players again now.

“It is a mixture of both now but if we can take advantage of anything that is a weakness we will try and do that - for us it is an opportunity to get a result and try and get some points on the board away from home.”

Allardyce believes West Ham’s poor away form, which has seen them score just seven times on the road and accrue only eight points away from Upton Park, means they cannot let Villa rush into a lead as they did in the 3-3 draw at Everton.

“The danger of Aston Villa is that if we allow them to get 3-1 up, I don’t think we’ll come back from that,” he said.

“We can’t afford that. Having the lowest goalscoring ratio away from home in the Premier League is why we haven’t picked the results up.

“We can ill afford to let Aston Villa get off to the sort of start they did against Everton. We’ve got to avoid that at all costs and play our way into the game, making sure we don’t give them any opportunities to score.

“If we can do that and then start to create the chances we always get - and put one or two in the back of the net - that’s what we’re looking for.”

Hammers defender Winston Reid has targeted a positive result at Villa and admits Benteke could prove to be a handful.

“They are still a good side and we have to give them a lot of respect,” he told whufc.com.

“We’ll go there with a gameplan and hopefully bring some points home.

“I think he [Benteke] is a good striker and he has scored quite a few goals already in his first year in England.

“We have to give him respect but we relish the opportunity as defenders to make sure they don’t score.”

We should be looking to knock 3 or 4 past Villa today IMO with no excuses !
I would go with the same team as against swansea but with J.Cole starting ahead of Vaz Te,
Iam going 3-1 West ham (Carroll,Nolan and Chamakh of the bench and benteke for them as he`s bound to score at some stage today )

I would say the most sensible way to win this game is to be solid from the start, get in their faces, press them high up the pitch and frustrate them (and their fans). We have enough about us going forward to be able to nick this. I would be happy to win 1-0
