    Well there's a surprise!

Now's the time to go for Charlie Austin and make sure we get him! English, scores goals even in a crap team and doesn't get injured what could be better. If our new sick-note ever comes back he would be a good back up for Austin!

it's immaterial how near or far his return to first team action is...

it's how soon after that date that he returns to the sick bay

When he's on his game I still think he's our first choice, hopefully along side Sakho

Not many times he's on his game unfortunately! Some people are unlucky but he is taking the rise now

Don't get how it's his fault? We had all this with Ashton; He was castigated for taking a wage.

I think a player is probably more gutted than a fan with injuries, yes they get paid atill but the reason they've got to this level is drive, ambition and fully utilise a natural talent.

The club must have some sort of insurance cover for long term injuries?

I for one rate him and don't believe we have to change our style to accommodate him.

As for his injuries feel for the bloke... It's not his fault and hate the snyde digs at him.... He gives his all whilst wearing the shirt!

Fully agreed. That said, praying to the claret and blue god that injuries now behind him and can have a productive and injury free season.

I'm beginning to wonder if the days of players like Carroll are numbered in the modern game at top level.
Nothing to do with skill and ability, or even the set-up that teams play, just that the modern game makes terrific physical demands on the players bodies. Everyone on the pitch including the keeper have to be ultra fit, which means high levels of training and practice matches even if you're not playing first team. Ligament and tendon injuries seem more common nowadays for all players just from the stress on the joints, and if you are a big guy whose game mainly consists of repeatedly jumping to challenge, then the landing stress and shock on the legs is really heavy. If you are a central defender you get a bit of slack time in the game to recover, but modern CFs are required to cover a lot more ground nowadays and have a much higher workrate than in years gone by.
I like Carroll, I think he gives the side a whole new dimension, but as a big guy with an injury record who puts himself about he's always going to be dangerously close to leaving the field on a stretcher again, I fear. Fingers crossed...

I do agree to an extent, but then when I see some of the crunching tackles and muddy pitches (how there wasn't more ankle and knee injuries I'll never know) of by gone years plus the poor diets I do wonder how teams got through seasons with such small squads- didn't even used to have subs back then. As a modern fan it's baffling.

I think a player like Carroll could survive in the meddlers game but (as a personal trainer) I'd give him a very unique and structured training program to help build up the explosive power needed.

Very interesting article I read yesterday, supposedly quotes from billic unhappy at Sam's handling of Carroll, rushing him back from injuries far too fast and not protecting him. Food for thought
