[size=34]West Ham v Leicester preview: Slaven Bilic's Upton Park return[/size]

Eighteen years after leaving West Ham as a player, Slaven Bilic returns to Upton Park for his first home league game in charge of the Hammers.

After his Premier League tenure got off to a flying start with an impressive – and rare – away victory at Arsenal, Bilic’s side now host Leicester, who made their own eye-catching start to life under a new manager on the opening weekend.

Claudio Ranieri’s side won 4-2 against Sunderland, with winger Riyad Mahrez on the scoresheet twice, to extend a sensational run which has seen Leicester win seven of their last 10 games in the Premier League going back to last season.

However, the Foxes' Premier League run in the capital is rather more infamous - their winless run in London stretches to 20 matches.

    Team news

[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.], according to Bilic.

On-loan right-back Carl Jenkinson returns to the squad after being ineligible to play against his parent club Arsenal, with Pedro Obiang also fit to make his debut if called upon. However, forwards Andy Carroll and Enner Valencia (both knee) remain sidelined, as does defender Joey O'Brien (hamstring).

Midfielder Morgan Amalfitano is not in contention having been made to train with the youth team following a disagreement with Bilic.

For Leicester, [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]. Midfielder Matty James remains Leicester’s only absentee due to the knee problem he picked up at the end of last season.

    Stats

West Ham have won seven of their previous eight home Premier League games against Leicester.

Leicester lost all six of their Premier League games last season in London.

Leicester have gone 20 Premier League games without a victory in the capital (D3 L17).

Both sides are looking to win their opening two games of a Premier League season for the first time since 1997/98.

Leicester City have won 25 Premier League points since April 1st 2015; four more than any other side.

Claudio Ranieri has lost three of his last four Premier League games as a manager versus West Ham.

    Merson's prediction

A top of the table clash! Both these sides had phenomenal results at the weekend, but I worry for West Ham in this one. Did West Ham get it right the other day or were Arsenal poor?

Leicester have bundles of pace... West Ham are going to have to bomb on at home, and the visitors are going to pick them off. People have been sceptical of Claudio Ranieri's arrival, but they have some very good footballers at the club already. He is not attempting to build them from nothing.

PAUL PREDICTS: 1-2 [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

It really wouldn't surprise me following last week`s superb win at the Emirates if we end up putting in an awful performance and get beat tomorrow by Leicester but I`m hoping I get proved wrong !
As harsh as it would be on Tomkins following last week`s win I would personally if I was Bilic start Jenkinson at Right back tomorrow and put Tomkins on the bench as Ogbonna and Reid looked good together last week

So basically I would keep with the same team as last week but instead swap Jenkinson for Tomkins

selection wise you and Bilic are on the same page as that's what he's done.

tough on Tomo but thems are the breaks and the best way to respond is to up your game.

Looking forward to this, should be an open and exciting game... hoping we don't get too carried away and come out at the end with a convincing win.

nothing good to report... we're 0-2 down and playing 3 minutes of injury time at the end of the first half.

we started pretty well but Leicester bided their time and then took their chances...

we're kinda under the hammer now and looking like we don't really have any ideas how to get past them...

not looking good at all at the moment.

gonna see how well a half time team talk can turn things around.

not a good end to the half... the replays showed it was indeed a foul on Sakho and should have been a penalty... which means there would have been a good shout for the Leicester goalkeeper being sent off...

a goal back in our favor and Leicester down to 10 men might have made enough of a difference for us to have a chance in the second half...

    as things stand....

Poor first half cost us this match. I hope they learn from this.

I also think the fans could have gotten behind the team a lot more.

Someone tell Zarate to shoot when he can! I thought he was our most creative player today together with Payet.

    Alfie's game comments:

Ok guys, the lucky shirt failed. Least I can wear my Brooking one next week. Which is ironic as sir Trevor was in the supps club today signings autographs and posing for selfies and giving away free shirts I believe. Least the two guys next to me got signed Brooking ones. I digress.

My seat was BB Bobby Moore lower, to the right side of goal towards the chicken run. It's hard with angles to see everything so as a summary.

I thought the entire defence look rather sloppy and easily circumvented today by Leicester. Jerks was ok getting forward and delivering crosses at least. a moment clear in my head early on was Oxford pointing at Reid to pick up his man who duly went and did it. Why is a 16 year old kid doing this??

Oxford gave the ball away a few times and seemed a lot less assured and tidy as he did at arsenal. Even I called the substitution at half time for obiang.

Obiang seemed a very decent player to me. Good passer of the ball.

Zacatecas I quite liked, he has some level of skill and is confident to run at players. He does over dribble it. Either (at28!!) he has to be coached when to release a ball or else he doesn't have the confidence/understanding with his team mates to pick a pass. But I liked him.

    Sakho seemed quiet to me.

Payet is different class, always trying things, running, crossing. A proper play maker. We need to clone him. And make him 22 again on a long contract.

I did worry there wasn't much on the bench today to positively change things about. In fact it occurred to me that downing on the bench would have been useful (and I thought it was good business selling him).

The crowd was fantastic to 2-0 then went very quiet. No booing of too negative. But quiet. Almost shocked. Picked up again second half.

I'm not entirely sure if we improved second half with obiang or Leicester simply sat back, let us pass it about (quite nicely) and decided to counter with pace. So good substitution, tactics, team talks or Leicester taking the foot off the pedal. Depends if your a glass half full/half empty sort of person. Lovely to see some old faces today.

Stewards around the barriers not the police. Didn't see more then a few people jump. Leicester looked very good, their fans very loud.

As Bilic said in various post-match interviews, we lost this game in the 1st half

Sadly that is down in part to the team selection and shape of the team, which falls squarely on Bilic's shoulders

Against Arsenal it was a masterstroke putting a player (Reece Oxford in this case) in the space in front of our back four to nullify a fluid midfield of Ozil, Ramsey, Carzorla and Oxlade-Chamberlain

Leicester play 4-4-2 so there are no "floating No.10's" to worry about. So why play Oxford in the same position as we did at Arsenal? He looked lost and barely touched the ball. The diamond shape with no cover on the flanks cost us both goals; add into that Reid having one of his "laid back strolling around" games and Cresswell yet again having a 'mare against Mahrez and by the time Bilic changed it, it was too late. Even if he didn't take Oxford off during the first half he should have changed the shape.

In addition that shape meant that Noble was left as the attacking midfield player with Kouyate wasted in a deep-lying role. Noble has neither the pace or the range of passing to play that role. From what I saw of Obiang - he does

Second half we had the correct shape - if not necessarily the correct personnel - on the pitch. Our only real creativity was coming from ONE player - Payet. We got the early goal from a great finish by Payet, following a good pull-back from Noble but only had one shot on target for the rest of the game when Sakho shot straight at Schmeichel. As you would expect we got caught on the break a couple of times when we were chasing the game and only poor finishing from Leicester stopped it going to 1-3

Lanzini injected a bit more urgency and directness into our play when he replaced Kouyate but it was too little too late

Anthony Taylor is a poor ref. He has previous at our place too. He is the same referee who sent off both Carlton Cole (after 60 minutes) and Daren Gibson (in the 90th minute) for high boots - BOTH of which were recinded. He missed a clear corner for us when Wes Morgan headed over his own goal (via the crossbar). He missed a clear corner for Leicester when Adrian tipped a scuffed shot around the post. He stood right next to Andy King and Kouyate and gave nothing as King pushed Kouyate in the back with both hands just as they were both going to go up for a header. His - and his assistant's- worst error was for them BOTH to miss Schmeichel clearly putting his arm out across Sakho's chest to stop him going past him. It was a clear penalty. Whether or not it was a clear goal scoring opportunity, and therefore a sending off, is debatable but it was a penalty. With Noble's penalty record and it still being first half, pulling a goal back would have had a huge effect psychologically going into the break

For all Allardyce's faults he was tactically aware of systems to play against different opponents. I think Bilic showed remarkable naievity playing Oxford in the position he did yesterday. I hope he learns from this

Haven't read any of the post-match guff other than the headlines... we lost the game in the first half? Leicester caught us cold?

I watched the game... I know what happened.

    I want to know why.

Why were we caught cold by Leicester?

They scored four goals last week.
Their form at the end of last season would have won them the title.

Why in a home game - our first of the season - coming off the back of a very creditable win, would we have been caught cold?

I get Tony's comments about the formation - several times yesterday I commented to... well, myself cos no one else was there - that the team really needed a Downing.

Fortunately we had Payet - who is easily our best player.

    But caught cold?

    Why?

    How does that happen?

My dear old Gran (who used to live on Katherine Road all of her life) has been dead for 20 years... she could have told you that Leicester would be up for it.
There are small children on the African sub-continent who have never seen or heard of football... who just on reading what I wrote above could have told you that Leicester would be up for it.

So I completely fail to see how a group of highly paid professionals who's livelihood is built around this and who would have been coached and instructed about their opposition...

    ...could get caught cold.

We started well... we had a good ten minutes... TEN minutes... AT HOME... first game of the season... last season at Upton Park...

Then we just kinda took our foot off the gas... and got suckered... same as we didi n Malta... same as we did twice against the Romanians...

No matter what the formation, no matter who the personnel... I don't get how this happens, how you become so lethargic and unbothered...
