FIFA World Ranking: Belgium to take over No. 1 spot from Argentina

Belgium will take over the No. 1 spot in the FIFA World Ranking in November following a 3-1 home win versus Israel on Tuesday.

The Belgians were third in the most recent ranking published at the start of the month, but with Germany losing in the Republic of Ireland and current No. 1 Argentina losing at home to Ecuador and drawing in Paraguay, the win against Israel put them in the top spot for the first time in their history.

The victory puts Belgium on 1,440 ranking points in the next ranking, which is released on Nov. 5, with Germany in second on 1,388 and Argentina falling to third on 1,383. Belgium were as low as 66th in the ranking in 2009, so moving to the very top in the space of six years is a remarkable achievement. The difference in ranking points was enough that if Belgium had lost at home to Israel they would have dropped out of the top three below Portugal into fourth.

Wales' short spell in the top 10 will come to an end next month, as they drop seven places from 8th to 15th. Chile will be the big climbers inside the top 10, climbing four places to 5th. Austria will hit a new all-time high, climbing a place into 10th.

Uruguay will rise eight places from 20th to 12th, with Italy up four from 17th to 13th.

Turkey are big winners too, with their late winner against Iceland not only taking them directly to Euro 2016 but also helping them shoot from 36th to 18th. Bosnia-Herzegovina will move from 30th to 20th and Ecuador also show a big jump from 33rd to 21st.

Netherlands defeat at home to Czech Republic, and failure to make Euro 2016, sees them drop two places to 16th -- their lowest rank since 2000 when they were only playing friendlies ahead of hosting the Euros alongside Belgium. Their rank is likely to suffer further next year without tournament ranking points. They topped the chart as recently as 2011, with their lowest position being 25th in 1998.

I wonder if anything produced by FIFA has any credibility at all any more. They are finished as an organisation.

Even 1st means nothing. It's winning something that matters, at least for national teams ...

On paper a really decent team, but they haven't actually won anything. Surely Germany should be number 1

They were too busy bailing out the Greeks to slip the customary brown envelope under Uncle Sepp's office door....
