    Spanish Second Division

    Post  daib0 on Sun 27 Mar 2016, 10:28 pm

The Spanish 2nd Division is the tightest in many a year - exactly like our Championship, two up automatically, and a playoff winner from 3rd to 6th ... they play a 42-game season so all to play for last 11 games! At the moment the top THIRTEEN clubs are only separated by TEN points!!

    Played - Points

    1. Leganes31 54

    2. Alaves 31 53
    ----------------------
    3. Gimnastic 31 51

    4. R. Oviedo 31 49

    5. Osasuna 31 47
    my local side from Pamplona

    6. Cordoba31 47
    ----------------------
    7. Zaragoza 31 46

    8. Lugo 31 46

    9. Alcorcon 31 45

    10. Elche 31 45

well, that was disappointing. 0-0 away, but against the bottom team in the league. Little play of interest from what my son says, although Osasuna had the better of the few chances that were. Against the lack of a goalscorer proved crucial (and the best striker Nino was injured so didn't play). Other results hardly helped either, so the table now reads:

    Pl - Pts

    1. Leganes 38 65
    2. Alaves 38 65
    -------------------
    3. Gimnastic 38 61
    4. Zaragoza 38 60
    5. R. Oviedo 38 59
    6. Osasuna 38 58
    --------------------
    7. Elche 38 56
    8. Girona 38 56
    9. Alcorcon 38 55
    10. Cordoba 38 55

I'm pretty much sure it's between these ten now, then there's a four point gap.

    Remaining games (4 left)
    Osasuna v Numancia
    Gimnastic v Osasuna
    Osasuna v Huesca
    Oviedo v Osasuna

Quite a difficult run-in, two against top 10, and Numancia are 11th! Still, taking points off direct rivals could be very rewarding!

Play-off first-leg against Gimnastic is Wednesday (but b***r I'm working that night)

    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Interesting!

So Osasuna from Pamplona are into the play-offs for promotion to the first tier of Spanish league football. It seems that the rules have been revised - now, there are many things that I'm not particularly fond of in Spanish football but this rule change I like:

In the Spanish play-offs, both semifinals and final, the matches are played across two legs, H & A. Goals are added up as normal, with away goals having higher value as per normal. If after two legs it's still equal, THEN extra time is played. If there is still no deciding result penalties are NOT used - the winner is the team who finished the higher in the regular league season.

Really like that, not down to the absolute lottery of penalty kicks...

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

won't bore you again if Osasuna don't make it to the first league!

My son Jon-Erik on the right as you look at it, with Roberrto Torres - Osasuna's top goalscorer this season. And if I say he's one of the most senior players in the whole squad that will show how incredibly young this team is!!

yeah, very ardent. Pamplona is the capital city of Navarra (Navarre) which is over half-Basque, so local identity is very important ...
