    West Ham v Stoke
    Saturday, 5 March 2011
    Barclays Premier League
Venue: Upton Park Date: Saturday, 5 March Kick-off: 1500 GMT
Coverage: Watch highlights on Match of the Day; listen on BBC Radio 5 live and local radio; text commentary on BBC Sport website and mobiles

    TEAM NEWS

West Ham midfielder Scott Parker looks to have overcome the shoulder injury that required a pain-killing injection prior to their win over Liverpool.

The Hammers are still without injured quartet Jack Collison, Kieron Dyer, Robbie Keane and Junior Stanislas, but Victor Obinna could return.

Stoke could start ex-Hammer Matthew Etherington for the first time since an operation to realign his jaw.

Jermaine Pennant and Abdoulaye Faye are both doubts with hamstring strains.

    West Ham

    Doubtful: Obinna (foot), Parker (shoulder)

Injured: Collison & Kurucz (both knee), Dyer (thigh), Keane (calf), Stanislas (hernia)

    Stoke

Doubtful: Etherington (jaw/back), Faye & Pennant (both hamstring)

    Injured: Sidibe (Achilles)

    MATCH PREVIEW

But for a failed medical during the January transfer window, West Ham striker Demba Ba may have been lining up for this fixture in a Stoke shirt. The Senegalese striker had agreed terms with City, only for the move to break down over a knee problem.

We were strongly advised by our medical team that it was a risk we could not take. You cannot spend large sums of money on a high-risk basis... We were disappointed, we wanted to sign the player and the eventual decision was nothing to do with his ability

Stoke chairman Peter Coates on Demba Ba

Now, six weeks later, Ba has the chance to show the Potters what they missed out on following his eventual move to West Ham. He has scored three goals in his two league starts and also reinvigorated fellow striker Carlton Cole, who has contributed four goals since Ba's arrival.

Ba this week distanced himself from claims by his previous club Hoffenheim that he has a bad attitude, having refused to train with them during the German winter break. He insists he is simply focusing on his Hammers future, and is hoping that his face continues to fit.

Stoke's striker pursuit ended with the arrival of John Carew. The Villa loanee has responded with two goals in eight games in all competitions, one less than Potters defender Robert Huth, who has netted three times in his last seven matches. Huth is the highest-scoring defender in this season's Premier League, with six goals.

League points aside, both teams will also be eyeing each other up ahead of next weekend's FA Cup quarter-final at the Britannia Stadium. This is their third meeting this term, having also met in the League Cup at Upton Park in October when West Ham prevailed 3-1.

    MATCH FACTS

    Head-to-head

    • The two sides drew 1-1 at the Britannia Stadium last September. It was the first ever Premier League draw between the clubs.

    • The hosts of this encounter have won only three of the last 11 league fixtures played between the clubs.

    • Stoke have won just two of their 13 visits to Upton Park since 1973.

    West Ham

    • They are currently sixth in the form table (behind the big four and Tottenham) after picking up eight points from the last 15 available.

    • The Hammers are looking to win back-to-back league matches at Upton Park for the first time in 11 months, since beating Sunderland and Wigan in April last year.

    • They have fielded 33 different players this season - more than any other club in the division.

    • If selected, Carlton Cole will be making his 150th club career start, while Wayne Bridge stands by to appear in his 300th Premier League game.

    Stoke

    • Stoke are on a club record-equalling run of five successive Premier league away defeats. Tony Pulis' side are also without a goal on their travels for 410 minutes.

    • The Potters have lost 10 of 14 away league games this season. Only Wolves (11) have lost more.

    • Stoke are winless in six league matches against London opposition this season (D1, L5).

    • If selected, Andy Wilkinson will be making his 100th league appearance in Stoke colours.

They are in a downward spiral, we are on the up. They are a shite team of cloggers from some dump in the potteries (went there once it was closed so never went back) who have only one form of football, throwing it a long way for some giant bonehead to head it goalwards. After last Sunday we are a superb football playing machine, passing well, with loads of movement from awesome skilful strikers, supported by sensational ball playing midfield geniussessss, who are backed up by the cream of defensive players from throughout the world..........................

    We're gonna lose 0-2 :pale:

No we are not, we are going to turn the DNB's over like last week with a very hard fought 2-1 victory WH Flag

Just to remind us of the ref we have today Sad Nicked from KUMB

"We should have had another penalty when Cole made some space in the box before putting a cross in which Knight blocked with his hand. Sadly it was not the last piece of gross incompetence we were to see from Mr Marriner during the afternoon..."

"Marriner was well placed to see both Davies' shove in the back of Upson and the subsequent boot to the face that the defender took from the strangely fireproof forward... if he genuinely thought that there was no contact perhaps he would like to explain why over an hour later Upson's face was still in no state to be x-rayed? Any referee who saw that and judged the goal to be legal has no place in the game at any level."

Not the best start then; would things improve when he returned at the beginning of October for the 1-1 draw with Fulham? From the KUMB.com match report:

"This match was spoilt as a spectacle right from the start by the efforts of referee Andre 'sub' Marriner. Sadly he started badly and got worse..."

"The rest of the half descended into farce as the visitors took advantage of Marriner's incompetence and gullibility..."

"With 13 minutes left an almighty cheer was raised as Marriner finally awarded us a free-kick..."

"Marriner got the abuse he deserved as he left the pitch – it had been a shocking performance that ruined the match as a spectacle. Just keep the likes of Marriner away from us..."

We are outplaying them all over the place and they have picked up 2/3 yellows already , be good to see another followed by a red in the 2nd half . WH really look like they are enjoying their game witch is really good to see , its been a long time comeing . One more goal from us in the 2nd will put this game to be and move us up out of the bottom shit zone . COYI

Just watched the game on football first, terrific, brilliant tactics by greenback, completely knocked the cloggers out of their game, matched them in the air, were first to the ball for most of the game. From my seat in Norf Naarfolk, not a bad game by any West Ham player, a really comprehensive win. Great running and strength by the three forwards, power and skill at the back, and the midfield is just purring.

I think we can turn this lot over next week, but it will be harder. I also feel we can get points from spuds and manure, in fact I think we will get 4 points from thsoe two games, 3 at spuds and 1 against manure.

Sky obviously know something that greenback has not told Upson, as they constantly referred to Parker as the captain, as they did last week cheesey grin
