After a mediocre season where do we need to invest?

Post  mottinghammer on Wed May 10, 2017 12:35 am

This season has been a series of not so great ups n downs. Our recruitment last season was absolute billocksso where do we look to improve for next year? Who can we bin, and who should we be looking to bring in to strengthen?

Binning for me is fairly easy, most of tbose brought in at the start of tbe season. Nordveit, Fergohuli, Maksaku (sorry about spilling)  are all not up to it in my opinion. Our much lauded youngsters? Oxford, Cullen and the lad at Wigan, will they ever be given a chance? Or should we just move them on to lower league teams and be done with it? My view on them is its make or break time, either tbey are good enough and should play now, or should be let go. Is Fletcher going to be the real deal, or another youngster we'll sell on, will be keep the young Argentinelad or should we let him go as another poor signing.

New goalkeeper and a good right back must come first. Think Adrian wants to go back to Spain?
    To go I would say:
Arbeloa.......don't know why Bilic brought him in.
    Tore............never made the grade.
    Sakho..........just a waste of space.

Player I have a question mark on:
    Carroll.........never about due to injury.
Noble...........slow, just plays us into trouble.
Fletcher........I don't think he will make the grade.
    Feghouli........don't know about him.
Calleri..........if the price was right I would keep him.

I want to know how Burke and Oxford can go from playing for the first team to being sent out on loan in the Championship.

Especially the way Oxford started last season away at Arsenal, he finished this season sitting on the bench for Reading ????

Fletcher is a real head scratcher for me as well, he showed more promise than most early in the season and still wasn't given a real chance.

Calleri has to go; he couldn't score in a brothel...

Fletcher needs to be given a chance, as do Burke and Oxford.

Noble has to stay, but he needs a creative player next to him so he doesn't try to make killer passes himself

    Jury's out on Snodgrass

I'd take the Dandruff Kid over Adrian and Randolph

And he needs a midfielder next to him that can tackle, think quicker and play forward to our shirts. He's good at running and pointing though.

He needs replacing, if we want any kind of progress our middle men have to be Kouyate and Obiang with Lanzini at number 10, OR BETTER.

Current squad & thoughts on improvement

Keepers - Adrian, Randolph, Speigel, Trott. I still feel we need to bring in a top keeper who can concentrate for 38+ games if we are to progress
Right Backs - Byram, Arbeloa, Rice. We are woefully short in this area
Centre Backs - Reid, Ogbonna, Fonte, Collins, Oxford, Burke, Rice. Plenty of cover here but they are either experienced and slow or inexperienced and quick(er). We need a happy medium and have to find the best combination; especially if we are continue with a back 3
Left Backs - Cresswell, Masuaku, Hendrie. Bilic clearly doesn't fancy Hendrie and will probably release him so we are light here; especially if Masuaku's poor injury record continues
Central Midfielders - Noble, Obiang, Kouyate, Fernandes, Nordtveit, Cullen. Lots of players here but not a lot of pace. Need to find the right combination to allow Kouyate & Fernandes in particular to drive forward knowing that there is disciplined cover behind them. Look at Spurs who have Dembele and Wanyama. Strong powerful and quick across the ground. If Bilic insists on playing Noble + 1 then we are going to continue to be weak in this area and the "knife through butter" will continue
Attacking midfielders - Lanzini, Antonio, Feghouli, Snodgrass. Very short in this area. Lazini has to be the diamond in this area and this attacking area built around him IMO
Strikers - Carroll, Sakho, Ayew, Calleri (loan) & Fletcher. Given the injury record of Carroll and Sakho and the fact that Calleri is on loan we are clearly short in this area. We need a proven goalscorer at PL level. We need pace, guile and goals. They cost money

Development players - Martinez, Samuelsen, Oxford, Burke, Cullen, Quina, Holland, Rice, Browne, Pike, Dobson. We clearly have some very talented youngsters but it is difficult to say how many (if any) of them are ready to make the step up to the PL or will need another season out on loan to gain further experience

Only just seen the goal we conceded at the weekend. We are so poor in this department. Collins got pulled out wide towards the ball, Ogbonna followed him taking no notice of the man behind him, Fernandes tracks back and closes the same player that Fonte is looking at leaving Vokes free to slot home.

Seriously need somebody who is going to bollock the fupp out of his team mates when this happens.

Reid does it - but AFTER we have conceded. I want leaders who are vocal and organise to STOP us conceding. I suspect that Fonte is that man but still feels like a newbie. He was captain at Southampton for a few years and a good one apparently. Noble is a good club captain but on the pitch not so good. Running around pointing while neglecting your own duties is not good enough. Ayew is very vocal on the pitch. We need 11 leaders out there. It is all too nicey nicey between the players and between the manager and the players......IMHO of course
