West Ham coach Wally Downes is targeting an unbeaten run for the rest of the season to ensure the Hammers’ Premier League survival.
The east Londoners are still in the bottom three with just nine league games left and Downes knows they are facing a battle to stay up.
But, following their recent resurgence in form, he’s confident they can get the job done.
Downes told the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast: “We’ve got nine games left, nine cup ties. Our target is to go to the end of the season unbeaten and, if we do that, we stay up for sure.
“It’s a great target for us to set – to go unbeaten for the last quarter of the season.”
The Hammers’ hopes have been boosted by the arrival of striker Demba Ba, and the long-awaited emergence of Thomas Hitzslperger from a long-term injury.
Downes added: “Demba Ba sees the goal and he’s straight at it. He’s route one, the boy. He gets the ball and he’s looking to shoot. It’s anything to score a goal for him.
“He’s not that interested in the build-up play, although he’s good at it, he just wants to get on the end of things. He’s been fabulous for us.
“And Hitzlsperger’s pedigree speaks for itself. He’s won 50 odd caps for Germany and it was like signing a new player in the transfer window. He’s come in and the players have responded to him, and he’s responded to them.”
