11 Reasons Why The Qatar World Cup Is Going To Be A Disaster

Nine years before the 2022 Qatar World Cup, the country is being criticized for everything from logistics to bribery to human rights abuses.

    It's a burgeoning disaster. Here's why...

    1. They're allegedly using 'modern-day slavery' to build the infrastructure.

The Guardian had a big report this week about the mistreatment of Nepalese migrant workers in Qatar. The workers — some of whom are working on the planned city which will host the 2022 World Cup final — accused their employers of withholding pay, forcing them to work in heat without water, making them live in squalid camps, and confiscating their passports to keep them from leaving the country. From June to August, at least 44 Nepalese died in Qatar from working construction, the Guardian reports.

    2. It's 120 degrees in summer so they'll probably have to play the tournament in winter.

During the bidding process, Qatar said they would host the event in summer. Now pretty much everyone has abandoned that idea, and FIFA could make it official soon.

    3. Homosexuality is illegal there.

While Qatar has more liberal policies than many Middle Eastern countries, it still has strict anti-gay laws. FIFA president Sepp Blatter recommended that gay men who want to go to the World Cup should "refrain from any sexual activities."

    4. There were widespread bribery allegations during the bidding process.

An English lord said that bribery was everywhere when FIFA was deciding between England and Russia for the 2018 World Cup and Qatar and the United States for the 2022 World Cup. He said that one FIFA member asked the English for a knighthood, and another wanted a $2.5 million school built in his native Trinidad & Tobago.

    5. There are no stadiums.

    ! !

    6. Entire cities that are necessary to host the event don't exist yet.

It will cost Qatar $220 billion to host the World Cup. They don't have the stadiums, hotels, or infrastructure to the host the event, so they have to build it all from scratch before 2022. By comparison, it cost South Africa $3.5 billion.
The city that will host the final, Lusail City, doesn't exist yet.

    7. The futuristic air-conditioned stadiums that Qatar promised to build aren't actually possible.

Qatar promised to build space-age stadiums that had unprecedented cooling technology so that the event could be held during the summer. But after they won the bid, they scrapped that plan. According to ESPN, the architecture firm that will build the stadium said "the system is too expensive and 'notoriously unsustainable' for the environment when used on a large scale."

    8. Playing it in winter will totally screw up the European leagues.

For many of these huge global stars, the club matters more than the country. While the World Cup is a huge event, postponing the English, Spanish, and Italian leagues will be a huge headache for everyone involved.

    9. FIFA will have to renegotiate all the TV contracts.

FIFA is holding secret talks with television networks from across the world in case the World Cup is moved to the winter, the Telegraph reports. Fox paid a record $425 million for the next two tournaments under the assumption that it would be played in summer and not clash with the NFL.

    10. It'll get drowned out by football in America.

The World Cup is the only time when mainstream America pays attention to soccer. If it has to compete with the NFL it'd be a disaster, especially if it's held in January and goes up against the playoffs.

    11. They probably won't sell beer in the stadiums.

There are select hotels and bars in Doha where you're allowed to drink. But you can't have alcohol or be drunk in public. It will be the most sober World Cup ever.

    Surely spells ... Disaster?!!!

The whole thing has been and remains an embarrassing joke for anyone seriously involved or interested in football. The only people that refuse to admit it are Blatter, FIFA and the Qataris. Surely one top rank national football association will have the balls to say " Stuff the whole stupid charade, we're not going." And when one does, they all will, and Blatters fraudulent house of cards will collapse.
If our own FA did it and walked away from FIFA, it would be the best thing they did for football since giving the game to the world.

Nice drawings, but that about all. Bent competition, run by bent people.

A country with no football gets the world cup because they bribe more people than the next lot, I don't think I'll be watching this one (Or the Russian one for that matter!)

Not ONE of those stadia has been built yet. Nice pictures that's all they are

In any case Qatar should NOT have won the bid for the World Cup in the first place but we all know why they did; the CORRUPT FIFA delegation and its decrepid leader

So, let's have an update on this disgraceful shambles!
_ FIFA's "enquiry" report into the bidding process for the 2018 and 2022 World Cups says there was no corruption or bribery. Absolutely not. None at all. Quite dreadful that anyone should suspect it. No surprise there then.
Of course, the investigator was not allowed to consider the latest evidence against the head of the Qatari bid, who has now been dismisssed. Oh no. Might have caused confusion, best to ignore it.
    - FIFA's "enquiry" report actually slates OUR FA for trying to curry favour with the ghastly Jack Warner. No doubt the FA are suitably embarrassed by it now, but the bare -faced cheek of Blatter and his cronies for pulling a stroke like this is quite breath-taking. The national football association that is most critical of FIFA is the only one that actually gets criticised by the "enquiry".
    - FIFA's principal investigator, the American lawyer Garcia, pipes up and says that the enquiry report does NOT reflect his findings at all. Some evidence has been ignored, some has been distorted and manipulated. What a surprise!!
The odious Blatter seems to think he is untouchable, and he is just going to carry on as normal. And he has so manipulated and corrupted the organisation that he probably can, with the support of those grimly hanging on to their seats on the gravy train.
My personal opinion is that our own FA has to grow some balls and actually withdraw from FIFA, and invite other associations who have also had a gutful of Blatter to join them in forming an organisation to replace it. Any sign of a petition? I'm itching to sign.
As a footnote, I've actually been to Qatar in the summer, and the idea that you could hold any sort of sporting tournament there is utterly laughable. It's hard enough just trying to breathe in temperatures over 120F. The players don't want to go, the fans don't want to go, even the armchair experts don't want to go. The football will be shite, the results will be a lottery. So where's the loss in the FA just saying we ain't going, Blatter, stuff your stinking, corrupt "competition" up your arse.

still one of the best posts I've read this year. i'd happily sacrifice an england world cup finals appearance in order to achieve this and form our own break away FIFA type organisation.

World Cup: Former FA chief David Bernstein calls for boycott

The English Football Association has been urged to lobby Uefa for a European boycott of the next World Cup - unless Fifa implements meaningful reform.

Former FA chairman David Bernstein said it was time for drastic action against football's world governing body. "England on its own cannot influence this," he said. "If we tried something like that, we'd be laughed at." He says a World Cup would be weakened without Europe's top teams and that a boycott would have public backing. "If I was at the FA now, I would do everything I could to encourage other nations within Uefa - and there are some who would definitely be on side, others may be not - to take this line," he added. "At some stage, you have to walk the walk, stop talking and do something." Bernstein said he also wanted Fifa president Sepp Blatter to step down but described him as "formidable, very shrewd, very smart", conceding it would "not be easy" to bring his reign to an end.

Actually it was a long time ago - I went to a place called Umm Said on a tanker to load oil in July. It was the hottest place I went to in ten years on tankers and i was never more glad to see the back of a place. You can spend all the money you want, but you can't change the climate.

I heard on the car radio that David Bernstein is suggesting a boycott of the 2018 World Cup unless FIFA is sorted out. Apparently he said they are "beyond ridicule". Following the footsteps of Emirates airlines, Sony has officially decided to end its sponsorship with FIFA. Some—but not all—of the brands are realizing, it seems, that supporting a group that supports any number of corrupt and nefarious practices isn't a good look.
