    Gillingham assistant boss Ian Hendon

Ian Hendon is expected to be announced as West Ham United’s new development coach this week, leaving Gillingham after one season.

Reports emerged late last week suggesting the 39-year-old had been appointed to Sam Allardyce’s backroom staff. The Hammers have yet to confirm the move but Archant KOS Media understands Hendon, who has been Gillingham’s assistant manager for the last year, has now joined and will be confirmed within the next couple of days.
Hendon was not at Gillingham’s friendly at Bromley on Saturday, but after the game manager Andy Hessenthaler made it clear he would not be commenting on his number two’s future.
There was still no official comment from Priestfield, although no one has denied the story.
The hold-up is likely to be down to the two clubs coming to an agreement on the amount of compensation which will be paid to the Gills for allowing Hendon to leave.
Hammers boss Allardyce said last week that he was looking for a coach to link the club’s academy and developing players to the first-team squad following Kevin Keen’s move to Liverpool.
He told the East London Advertiser: “We are looking at people at the moment and hopefully we will have someone in place in time for the trip to Switzerland.”
Hendon has only spent one season with the club after controversially joining Gillingham last summer. The former Barnet boss had been recommended to Dover Athletic by Hessenthaler when he left to join the Gills. The Whites duly appointed Hendon, but did not sign his contract before going on holiday during which time he was offered the job as Hessenthaler’s assistant, which he accepted.
