Sheffield Wed v West Ham United FC _57657496_44936468 Sheffield Wed v West ham United FC Sheffield Wed v West Ham United FC 367

    Introduction

    • West Ham United travel to Sheffield Wednesday in the FA Cup with Budweiser third round. The tie marks the first meeting between the two clubs since the Hammers scored a 4-2 League Cup second-round victory at Hillsborough on 20 September 2005.

    • The Hammers and Owls have met three times previously in the FA Cup, with the Yorkshire club coming out on top each time. Sheffield Wednesday recorded a 1-0 first-round success at Hillsborough on 8 January 1921, a 2-1 sixth-round win on 12 March 1986 and a 2-0 fifth-round replay victory at the Boleyn Ground on 25 February 1987 following a 1-1 draw at Hillsborough four days previously.

    • West Ham United won their 1964 FA Cup semi-final replay at Hillsborough, defeating Manchester United 3-1 on 14 March 1964. Ronnie Boyce scored twice and Geoff Hurst once in front of an estimated 65,000 fans.

    • West Ham United travel to Hillsborough seeking to extend an impressive away record this season. The Hammers have collected more points on their travels in the npower Championship than any other club (24) in 2011/12.

    • Sheffield Wednesday are unbeaten at Hillsborough this season, winning nine and drawing two of their eleven home league matches. In the knockout competitions, the Owls knocked Championship side Blackpool out of the League Cup and defeated League Two club Aldershot Town in the FA Cup second round.

    • West Ham United have lifted the FA Cup on three occasions, in 1964, 1975 and 1980, and were runners-up in 1923 and 2006. Sheffield Wednesday have also won the competition three times, in 1896, 1907 and 1935, while the Owls were beaten finalists in 1890, 1966 and 1993.

    • The Hammers reached the sixth round last season courtesy of home wins over Barnsley, Nottingham Forest and Burnley before going down to a 2-1 defeat at Stoke City in the last-eight.

    • Sheffield Wednesday reached the fifth round in 2010/11, ending a run of five consecutive third-round exits. Having entered at the first-round stage this term, the Owls won 2-1 at League Two Morecambe before defeating Aldershot Town 1-0 in the second round.

    • Unlike in npower Football League matches, both clubs will be allowed to name seven substitutes under FA Cup rules.

    • A replay will be required if the score is level after 90 minutes. It would be held at 7.45pm on Tuesday 17 January at the Boleyn Ground.

    Team news

    West Ham United

    • West Ham United are likely to name a much-changed side to the one which scored a 1-0 npower Championship victory over Coventry City on 2 January.

    • The likes of Gary O'Neil, Henri Lansbury, John Carew, Frank Nouble and Freddie Sears could be restored to the starting XI, while youngsters Dan Potts and Rob Hall could also be included. George Moncur and Brian Montenegro, yet to make their first-team debuts, will also hope to figure, with the manager able to name seven substitutes.

    • Winston Reid is likely to feature as he continues his return to full match-fitness following eight weeks out with a dislocated shoulder, while Sam Baldock is also hoping to get more game time after his return from a month out with a hamstring injury.

    • Herita Ilunga has returned from his loan spell at Doncaster Rovers.

    • Marek Stech (shoulder), Matt Taylor (calf), Abdoulaye Faye (calf) and Guy Demel (thigh) are the only injury absentees.

    • Pablo Barrera and Jordan Spence are on season-long loans at Real Zaragoza and Bristol City respectively. Cristian Montano (Dagenham & Redbridge), Peter Kurucz (Rochdale) and Callum Driver (Burton Albion) are out on temporary loans at present.

    Sheffield Wednesday

    • Former West Ham United goalkeeper Stephen Bywater has joined Sheffield Wednesday on a free transfer from Derby County, having played 12 times for the Owls during a loan spell earlier this season.

    • Defender Danny Batth is available after extending his loan spell from Wolverhampton Wanderers until the end of the season. Newcastle United defender James Tavernier has also been given permission to play by his parent club, but it remains to be seen if on-loan Stoke City winger Ben Marshall is allowed to take part by the Potters.

    • Full-back Jon Otsemobor returned to action on New Year's Eve after four months on the sidelines with an Achilles tendon injury.

    • Leading scorer Gary Madine has been nursing a broken toe but is hopeful of making a return to first-team duty soon.

    • Right-back Lewis Buxton has missed the Owls' previous eight matches with a hamstring injury, but could be back in action this weekend.

    • Midfielder James O'Connor has played his final game for the club, having suffered a serious cut to his leg in November and announced plans to leave for the United States this month.

Nice one Suz , give my regards to Sire . Have you seen the delays that are due ? I assume you are going by WH coaches so not too much to worry about as they should have it sorted . Have a nice day out and even though it is not as important as promotion it would still be nice for a win for all the traveling support WH Flag

Been over for a friendly chat on the Owls chat Forum to get some info on their thoughts for sundays game .

    Davidioso
Welcome John Lyall and good luck to you irons too - see previous thread mentioned above

    Dave
....born opposite West Ham's old training ground

    Oxen Owl
    FYI

Ben Marshall is rubbish and shouldn't even make the bench and Semedo can't tackle to save his life.

    Danish
I'd like to think we will give you a good game on Sunday. It will depnd on both line-ups, Megson will put out a strong team (I think) but we may have to do without one of our better player's in Ben Marshall, because Stoke don't want him playing in the cup.

Our home form this season and the chance to prove ourseleves against a very good Championship team should be great motivation for the player's and staff. I think it will be close and won by the odd goal.

    Southportdc

You want to watch out for J. Johnson's pinpoint distribution if he plays. Focus all your attention on that wing. Marshall is nothing special. Also if Lowe plays don't worry too much, he's young and nippy but not got that finishing touch yet.

If Prutton plays you're in trouble as he is Jesus.

    Theowlsman

All you need to know is that you'll get "Hammered", Kung Fu'd to fook, and bullied off the park.

We are Wednesday, and we do what we want.

Good luck though mate. We like West Ham ordinarily.

    Steelowl
    Welcome mate

the occasional snide remark is to be expected on here as we often get the other scummy lot on in disguise

It's looking like I won't be able to attend either damn it - but like you I want to get rid of cup game distractions from this season we both have bigger fish to fry.

    Re the Game
Depending on the squad GM deploys I think we have quite a good chance to get a result from you guys especially if SA plays a weakened team. It will be nice to play a proper club instead of places I previously thought were only names of railway stations and my view (looking thro blue glasses) will be if we score in the first 15mins you will be looking at a 2 goal loss. If you score first I think the game will probably be much tighter and finish a draw.

    As for the scum

I doubt very much that even they are stupid enough to try anything at the ground but obviously anyone coming should watch your back if you venture near the City centre round the station.

All the best after Sunday and hopefully we are both in better divisions next year

    Oi_You_Owl
I really like west ham and not just for obvious reasons. Hope they get back to the premier and we too can play em up there.

As for pigs, it wouldnt surprise me if a few of the scrubbers were lurking around town looking to bully a few hammers. Note to west ham fans: throw them a few coppers and u should be ok. Safe trip and 2-1 wednesday.

    Suzuki_San

Weird this one...I am not too bothered about the result, would rather sacirifice the cup so we do not have the headaches of additional games where we can pick up injurues or tire out players which will be to the detriment of the league. And we all want to get out of this arsehole of a league...certainly now we're in the good position that we are.

I can see a few players being rested. It won't be a poor side, by any stretch, but we certainly won't be at full strength. Am I right in thinking you'll do the same, sitting in 2nd place like us? Our next league game is 6 days later against league leaders Charlton...need I say more.

To answer a few of your questions, I thnk well go up in 2nd place, as will you. I think we need to strengthen with permanent signings in place of loans, we need a winger or two, we could do with another striker, another centre half and a left back. I think the result will be close...could go either way. Our best player won't be playing as he's on loan to us and cup tied, so who you need to look out for is Semedo, who has been awesome at defensive midfield this season.

It'll be 2-1. A toss up as to who will get the result...depends on who our respective managers pick!

    TonyOwl88

    My thoughts too.

We have a squad of short players, and like to pass it out from the back.

Don't worry about set pieces, because we never do anything from them... leave plenty of players up the pitch to counter when we inevitably waste 'em instead.

Look out for Mark Reynolds. He's our playmaker, and our talisman Ben Marshall who will definately start.

Gary Megson doesn't know what he's doing, and we want him OUT!

And we need to strengthen our goalkeeping position, so take your shots from far and wide, because you never know.

    Soul Power
Another Hammer. No problem your'e more than welcome. At least we can talk football with you lot and have intelligent exchanges. Some that come on here from other clubs have nothing inbetween the ears. The Pigs (You call them Scum which is fine) are the worst who pretend to be Wednesday and put on remarks which we know not to be true. The hammer in peace thread is a good example of Pigs trying to stir it by saying we're friends with Chelsea and theyr'e our second team, nothing could be further from the truth. As for the match tell Big Sam we are hopeless at free kicks and corners and we only play hoof ball. Its a waste of time markin Marshall if he plays that is as he has no pace and cannot cross a ball. I would be inclined to play your reserves cause we have no intention of winning. Your best bet is to keep everything in the air as we are a very small and fragile side who cannot mix it. Anyway best of luck in the league and lets hope you get your rightfull place back in the Prem.
As for Pig fans causing trouble they only tend to pick on women and kids however they will have a go at Male adults as long as it is at leasrt 5 to 1 in their favour, however when the ruck is described in the next BBC book they will have been outnumbered 3 to 1.

Friendly bunch , unlike the scum they share the town with .

I doubt Megson or BFS care much about this game as both want promotion.

I would be very disapointed though if BFS put out a very weak team.

Yep, We're getting the supporters coach, we are going mainly becuase we havent been before.

I can see O'Neil, Pottsy & Nouble all starting. Baldock may get a start to build up his match fitness. Piquionne will be involved as Sam does not want him in our first team ! There is not much else we can change. George Moncur and Robert Hall will probably be involved too

Enjoyed reading from the Owls' point of view.....

So neither team nor set of fans that bothered about the result, figures I s'pose.

I'd like to see effort though, you know both sides making a game of it. I'd rather
never see Piquionne in the claret and blue ever again....But the Sheff supporters
have been nice to us, and it would at least give them a laugh...

I just hope that due to the fact that both clubs are not really intrested in the cup this year due to the league that it dont end in a draw as the last thing we need and I bet they dont need is a replay Smile

And I think it was moved as to prevent trouble arising between Fans of West ham and Sheff Utd Smile Just a thought .. Have we played them since the Tevez affair begun and ended ? Would love to play them and absalotely thrash them cheesey grin

    Reid steeled for Sheffield test

The New Zealand defender netted his first goal for the club in the 5-1 fifth-round victory over Burnley last season and is looking forward to taking part in the famous competition again.

Reid, who has recently returned to first-team duty after eight weeks on the sidelines with a dislocated shoulder, is also aiming to get some more much-needed gametime under his belt at Hillsborough after starting the defeat at Derby County and victory over Coventry City.

"I've been out for eight weeks and had only trained two or three times before I made my comeback so it's going to take me a little more time to reach full match-fitness," he told the official website.

"Monday was an improvement on the Derby game so I'm happy that with that and the fact we kept a clean sheet and won, which was the main thing.

"I haven't had too many opportunities to go out and do some running so it was a case of just getting through the injury and saving my energy so I'm getting there. The shoulder is getting better. It's still a bit sore but I've got through two games and it'll be all right. My timing could be a lot better but that will come."

Reid was part of the West Ham squad which reached the FA Cup quarter-finals last season before being beaten 2-1 at Stoke City. Having enjoyed victories over Barnsley, Nottingham Forest and Burnley last term, the 23-year-old is targeting another extended run in the competition in 2011/12.

"We would like to do well in the FA Cup because it is a good competition to be part of. Of course I'd love to play because I want to w**k on getting my match-fitness up to where it was before I got injured.

"I've got good memories from last year and it would be great to go on a decent run again this season."

1.35pm - The Hammers have arrived at Hillsborough. There was a little bit of drama as the team coach could not fit under the concourse next to the players' entrance, but nothing to worry about! Big Sam happily signed autographs on his way into the stadium, as did a few of the players.
