According to Insolvency News West Ham United forward John Carew has been declared bankrupt. The former Aston Villa and Stoke City player has been issued a bankruptcy order in the High Court after being pursued by HMRC.
HMRC had petitioned to for the 32 year old to be made bankrupt. The petition was filed on 16th January while a bankruptcy order was issued 5th March.
Carew has had a successful but sometimes controversial career. He has played in six different leagues in Europe - Norway, Spain, France, Turkey, Italy and England. The Norwegian international started out at Valerenga in Norway in 1998. He also played for Rosenberg in his two years in Norway before enjoying his big break by getting a transfer to Spanish giants Valencia. Valencia in the early 2000s was something of a big player in La Liga and Europe. Carew won two La Liga tiles whilst with the Spanish club and also appeared in a Champions League final where they were beaten on penalties by Bayern Munich.
Carew spent three years at Valencia before moves to Roma (loan), Lyon and Besiktas prior to getting a move to the Premier League. Carew joined Aston Villa in 2007 but it was during this time in his career that controversy would follow him. He was spotted in a Birmingham nightclub hours before an important UEFA Cup tie and was subsequently fined and dropped by manger Martin O’Neill. He spent three seasons as a Villa player employee before going on to play for Stoke City (loan) and present club West Ham United.
Carew has also had a long successful international career. He has represented Norway 91 times since making his debut in 1998, scoring 24 times
