South East Water hoping for winter rainfall


More rain is needed to replenish levels in some aquifers, a water firm has said.

South East Water, which supplies 2.1m customers in Kent, Sussex, Surrey, Hampshire and Berkshire, said the aquifers provided 75% of its supply.

Autumn and winter rainfall was vital if they were to continue recovering from the most recent drought, the firm said.

Although reservoirs are full after a damp summer, some of the deeper aquifers remain very low.

The company said demand for water had dropped by about 5% compared with the same period last year, equating to nearly 30m litres less water being used each day.

All very well to laugh, but if the rain lands on the road or, the pavement, or your tarmacced or paved garden and runs straight to the drain, and thence to the river, and off to the sea, its no fuppin' use to anyone. "Aquifers" means "the ground", if you don't let rain soak into the ground, it doesn't end up in springs or reservoirs where we can use it, it's just GONE.

well it is their own fault for pocketing all our cash for donkeys years, never investing in the network or fixing the leaks.. now they want more , utter bastards

I could never be accused of being a socialist, but 'water' should never have been privatized, its a neccesity of life!

I also would re-nationalise, transport (railways/buses ect), the NHS (before anyone says anything, try and get anything done on the NHS, then tell the consultant you will pay!) Education (bin Eaton/Harrow ect) and the police service which this bunch of tossers is now trying to privatise, (if you think the police were bad before wait till we have US style policing with elected monied 'commissioners' who pander to whoever bankrolls them)
