Hooligans at football
do you think this is creeping back in to football or has it never really left . I sort of had the feeling that it nearly died out , there was always gonna be little small scuffles but with what I read on Bookface it seems to be growing , anyone else have any views on this ?

there is a new younger generation that have watched too many shit films , but they don't get it, they have attacked scarfers and families, this new breed are a gutless bunch who would not dream of taking on the big boys , wankers

Re: Hooligans at football
In my view top-flight UK football has simply priced itself out of the range of most of the hooligan element, and that is what will prevent it's return to the grounds. When it was peanuts to get in, the monkeys turned up. £40 plus is a sizeable sum to most young men and a great deterrent to anyone just looking for the chance of some aggro. It doesn't seem to deter enough fans to leave the stadiums half-empty ( except in backwaters like Wigan) so there's little chance of price levels dropping. I don't know what the young bloods do with their testosterone nowadays; apart from vicious gang wars on a pretty small scale there is little widespread violence unless a real riot situation develops. Maybe they are all too zonked out on drugs most of the time?

Re: Hooligans at football
I've always had an 'professional' interest in football hooliganism, and compared to its hay dya in the 70's and 80's its none existent at top level grounds. It does still exist generally away from grounds and seems to be more confined to groups whop know each other and organise their 'rucks' to suit. There are some anomalies, Millwall is and will always be the worst football crowd in the UK, they do not understand 'normal' behaviour and therefore should not be treated in a normal manner! Lids, Stoke and Liverpool still attract what I would call criminal groups, who rob and seal as well as cause general mayhem. But compared to 30 years ago these guys are pussies, who wouldn't get a look in with the real hard groups of the past.
Having had more Saturdays cancelled to do central London football reserve than I care to remember, I'm glad its no longer the problem it was. Hope it stays that way so I can take the next Motty to West Ham before he is a teenager.

Re: Hooligans at football
As Motty has said, it is away from the grounds now, CCTV, old bill with cameras have made an impact, back streets and out of sight of the old bill appear to be where small farty little groups of this new generation are trying to make their mark.

the memories come flooding back
do you remember the two young geezers giving it large until they saw two fat bald headed blokes staring at them at Leicester away ?
they'd obviously never heard of the DTVF.

Re: Hooligans at football
Mentioning Leicester reminds me of a tale an Enfield mate of mine told me. Enfield drew Leicester in the cup & took quite a large number up there. My mate was sat close to the Leicester fans & there was quite a lot of banter going on that he was enjoying. Then the Leicester fans started up a chorus of 'you fat bastard'. My mate was looking around to see who was the recipient for it to dawn on him that he was their target. He agreed to the diet his mrs wanted to put him on when he got back home.

Re: Hooligans at football
Can I jump in with a dtvf flash back: the time we bet on Barry to get first goal ( I think he was playing left back for villa at the time but was their penalty taker so seemed a good punt). We went mad when Barry won a penalty and scored. Think it was before citeh at home with big nosed guy
