Harry Redknapp has praised Scott Parker but warned West Ham that they will struggle to hold onto the newly-crowned Footballer of the Year if they are relegated this season.

    • Parker takes prestigious prize

On Friday it was announced that Parker had won the prize awarded by the Football Writers' Association after a season in which his influential performances have stood out for the Hammers.

Parker's form at Upton Park is no secret to Redknapp, who has targeted the midfielder on numerous occasions over the past two seasons.

And while he stopped short of expressing his interest once more, Redknapp did say the East London club would be at risk of losing Parker should their battle against relegation fail.

"It's fantastic news for Scott, it couldn't happen to a nicer lad," Redknapp said. "What he has done this year in a struggling team is great. I'm delighted for him.

"I've always liked him. You couldn't dislike him as a guy and a player. Hopefully West Ham will stay up and he'll stay. If they don't stay up they've got a problem keeping the Footballer of the Year haven't they?"

Tottenham's focus at present is securing a victory over West Brom on Saturday which would take them above Manchester City and into a Champions League place, although Gareth Bale is a "big doubt" due to injury.

Spurs enjoyed an excellent run in the competition this season that was only halted at the quarter-final stage by Real Madrid, but Redknapp has warned it will not be easy to secure a regular place amongst the European elite.

"Getting in that top four is a bonus," Redknapp said. "Every year the same four teams got into the Champions League apart from the one year that Everton broke in and then we broke in ahead of Liverpool.

"Now, suddenly, there's Man City and they want to be in there every year too. Getting in the top four is going to be harder and harder every season."
