Republic of Ireland goalkeeper coach Alan Kelly has backed Stephen Henderson to make a big impression at West Ham United.

Henderson completed a permanent transfer from Portsmouth to the Boleyn Ground in May after impressing during a two-and-a-half month loan spell at the tail-end of the 2011/12 season.

The highly-rated 24-year-old enjoyed an outstanding first half of the campaign at Fratton Park, dislodging Jamie Ashdown as No1 and making 27 appearances in all competitions.

Henderson backed-up Robert Green during the closing weeks of the season as West Ham sealed promotion to the Barclays Premier League via the Play-Offs.

With Green's contract set to expire at the end of June, former Ireland international Kelly told the Irish Times that Henderson is ready to step into the England man's position between the sticks for the Hammers.

"Stephen has obviously gone to West Ham with the intention of breaking into the first team," said Kelly. "He's obviously gone there in the expectation that West Ham would get promoted and I think that Stephen will be looking at, if Rob Green goes, being the number one for next year."

Henderson came close to working alongside Kelly at the 2012 UEFA European Championship finals. Capped eight times at Under-21 level, the West Ham stopper could have received a late call-up when No1 Shay Given suffered knee and calf injuries that threatened his involvement in the tournament. However, Kelly has confirmed that Given is fit and will remain with the squad.
