West Ham today denied allegations that Andy Carroll assaulted a photographer while on a players’ Christmas party in Dublin.

Photographer, Paddy Cummins, who required hospital treatment on an eye injury, alleged that Carroll attacked him after leaving a burger bar in Grafton Street in the early hours of Monday morning.

Carroll is out of action until next month with a knee injury and it was alleged he became angry when Cummins tried to take pictures of him without a protective brace on his knee, as the striker was about to board a rickshaw back to a hotel.

The squad flew to the Republic of Ireland capital on Saturday, following their lunchtime 3-1 win over Chelsea.

A West Ham spokesman said: “Andy Carroll was in Dublin as part of a social trip with full permission of the management team.

“Andy agreed to have a number of pictures taken at the request of a photographer, who was waiting on the street. Despite this, the photographer then carried on taking photos in the close proximity of Andy and was politely asked to stop by the private security team working on the trip.

“When he then continued taking more photos he was restrained by the security team for Andy’s safety.

“Eyewitnesses state at no point was there any physical contact between Andy and the photographer.

“The Garda took statements from the group back at the hotel and no further action was taken.”

A Garda spokesperson said: “There have been no arrests but the incident is under investigation.”

The squad flew back to London last night, to begin their preparations for Sunday’s Premier League match at home to Liverpool, the club Carroll is on a season’s loan from.

Meanwhile, West Ham face a battle to hold onto Mohamed Diame, who was outstanding after coming on at half-time against Chelsea.

The midfielder, signed on a free transfer from Wigan in the summer, has a release clause which would allow him to leave if clubs make a sufficient offer, thought to be around £7million.

I'm guessing its the only way us "smaller" clubs can sign players of a good standing within the game (we were newly promoted) so its a case of put the clause in to get the deal done and at least guarantee some money back later on or the deal doesn't get done at all?

from fans POV it is sad and frustrating to read.

Aye, but if a player is ambitious enough and confident enough then then are always going to want get out clauses in case bigger clubs come knocking. It sucks a nut, but that's just life supporting a smaller club.

Exactly Tony but the Fail still have to put the last word in .........

"Carroll now looks likely to escape recrimination from police and West Ham over the incident."
