Afonso Alves had an amazing goalscoring record at Heerenveen. Then signed for Middlesbrough for £12.7m. He was disappointing and they got relegated. I'm not necessarily comparing the two but a great record in the Eredivisie does not ensure a similar return in the Premier League.

if you look at his highlight reel on Utube... at least half the goals come form the penalty spot... which is nice - but hardly justifiable in the 'he scores all the time' stakes.

We don't get awarded that many pens to make it worthwhile just buying a penalty taker.

Besides... Demba Ba has a 7m escape clause in his Toon contract... now he's a player who has proven he can score goals at west Ham and also score in the Prem...

Which would be the better buy?

Could Demba Ba be the lone battering ram of Sam's tactics though.....

Yakubu has signalled his intention to leave relegated Blackburn and is available for £1million.

The Nigerian striker is wanted by newly-promoted Reading, Southampton and West Ham and he has no wish to drop down to the Championship.

West Ham Favourites to Land Louis Saha as Tottenham Allow Striker to Leave
Louis Saha's Tottenham career could be coming to an end after just five months after reports emerged suggesting the striker was set to be released by the north London club.

The striker was only brought to the club in January after Roman Pavlyuchenko was sold but it seems his spell could be a short one, with the Daily Mail reporting that he is set to leave and that West Ham have already emerged as the leading contenders to sign him.

The 33-year-old forward was widely criticised by supporters of Tottenham after he took to Twitter to congratulate a number of the Chelsea players after they won the Champions League title.

Tottenham are relatively short of option in forward positions as Emmanuel Adebayor was only on a season-long loan deal and should Saha leave then Jermain Defoe will be the only recognised senior striker at the club.

West Ham have been linked with the striker by the Mail as manager Sam Allardyce looks to strengthen his squad after gaining promotion back to the Premier League.

The Hammers already have a number of strikers at the club but Carlton Cole is the only one with experience of the Premier League as both Nicky Maynard and Sam Baldock have never played in the top flight.

I'm with 3W, defo worth on a one season deal! Might even be picked before Carlton Cole.

I haven't been following him lately, but he certainly was a handful for us every time we played Everton! Quality player in his time. Maybe on a one year deal ?

it would all depend on our plans, if we do the usual and wait until the end of the window and he is still available at the so called £1M fee, then its not a lot to lose, but none of this 40-50k a week bollix

Press doing their own linking again. Probably because we have enquired about Zaha at Palace and it's only one letter out. Still not quite the big hold up target man we need (for Sam's system ) but if the wages were ok then decent record.

Ba, Holt, Dzeko, Balotelli, Cisse, Defoe, Sturridge, Suarez, crouch, Bent, Hernandez, van vaart, Bale.

and that was in a relegated side,

he was joint 4th top goal scorer
