Wigan have the chance to claw their way out of the relegation zone when they visit West Ham on Saturday.
With Aston Villa not travelling to play Manchester United until Monday, the Latics know that three points will lift them out of the bottom three.
Of course, Roberto Martinez's team are used to producing late charges to get away from trouble, having won seven of their final nine games last season to ease to safety in style.
The Spaniard has been encouraged by his side's form this spring too, with his players securing their place at Wembley for next month's FA Cup final, but he knows league points are needed fast.
Martinez said: "We have been in this position before and know what to expect but that doesn't make it easier. For me, it is the hardest battle we have had for a few years but we are ready for it."
They can certainly expect a battle when they visit Upton Park, as Sir Alex Ferguson can attest after his United side were on the receiving end of a robust performance from Andy Carroll in midweek.
The Hammers have competed well on their return to the top flight and have no relegation concerns of their own having already moved to 39 points with five games remaining.
Indeed, Sam Allardyce's side could move above Swansea and Fulham into the top half of the table if results go their way at the weekend and they secure an eighth home win of the campaign.
If they achieve that feat on Saturday, Wigan fans will be left wondering whether the focus on their forthcoming FA Cup final could end up distracting them from their very real relegation fears.
