Is It Time to Give Up on Carroll? Empty Is It Time to Give Up on Carroll?

Post  westhamonkey Wed 23 Jul 2014, 2:58 am

I kinda even hate to pose the question... but apparently he's injured his ankle again (not in the same place as his last injury - is that a good or bad thing?) and will miss the games in NZ (so that was a waste of a plane seat...

But seriously... we spent a shitload of cash on him.. and he's showed flashes of brilliance... but he wasn't exactly world beating when he finally popped up towards the end of the season... which made it seem like he wasn't fully fit.

Now he's not even playing in pre-season, which puts his appearance in the starting line-up in question... again.

We're all pissed that BFSA built the team around him and we actually played better when we had no striker at all...

Now we've bought some new players... and Pards has blabbed in the press that he'd be happy to try to re-sign him...

so is it time to say... "thanks Andy... would have been great to have you in claret and blue slamming the goals in... but it just ain't gonna happen and we need to move on"

    From KUMB.

    By: Staff Writer

Andy Carroll could be out of action for several weeks, according to reports emerging this afternoon.
A trusted source posting on the KUMB Forum this afternoon claims that Carroll's ankle injury is far worse than previously estimated, with the striker likely to be unavailable for between "two to four months".

Carroll is currently in New Zealand with the first team squad but West Ham have already revealed that he will not be taking any part in either of the two tour matches - the first of which West Ham lost to Wellington Phoenix this morning.

The same source had previously suggested that Carroll was sent home from the pre-season trip to France earlier this month after being told that his fitness levels were unacceptably low.

Only 24 hours ago West Ham revealed that Carroll would miss both games of the current Football United tour in New Zealand, stating that the striker had been relieved of first team duties as "a precautionary measure after developing a sore left ankle during training".

The statement added: "It should be clear that the affected area is not in any way associated with the previous injury he successfully overcame towards the end of last season."

Sick and tired of this. Out with him!

Buy Konoplyanka, he is dying to get to the Premier League and is a fantastic player who will be the next Arjen Robben! £12m to get someone like this is very very interesting.

He's been far too fragile for me, and piss poor value for money, and I wouldn't be surprised if The Management ( even including BFS) have come to the same conclusion. We have now invested in a fair bit of striking potential, more than I expected, and the money has to come from somewhere - I fully expect him to be off before the end of the window, probably back to where they can understand what he's saying.

Been confirmed (well sky sports) that it's 4 months. I honestly don't think we'd get much more then 4-8 million tops for him. Very few clubs would want to touch a player with his injury record.

I've said this before, but let's not forget that we ALL wanted him signed. At that last home game of the season all 34,000 of us (I was there with geezer, Lesley and niki) were signing to sign him up. It's just a very unlucky thing.

I was one of those firmly in the 'sign Andy Carroll' camp and I'd be his biggest fan if he was playing like and scoring like he did in those far off days of yore...

trouble is, here we are a couple years later... he's cost us 15m and played only a handful of times, hardly looked like a decent player and is going to miss the first half of the season, at least... AGAIN!

SO what people thought a long time ago is irrelevant.

We didn't get what we wanted

We didn't get what we paid for

We haven't had value for money

The club has suffered as a direct result of the 'Andy Carroll' policy

so, love him or hate him, regardless whether it's his fault or just typical West Ham bad luck...

we need to look at the now, and the future.

The guy is a complete liability... and we can't just sit around twiddling our thumbs waiting/hoping he might get fit at some point in the future.

We need a settled team with a settled, consistent, full-time goal scoring striker - preferably 2 - and a half decent team to back them up.

West Ham co-owner David Sullivan has told talkSPORT they will look to bring in another striker after club-record signing [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] was ruled out for four months.
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
Carroll, 25, has suffered a nightmare spell at Upton Park since [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] - he has only made 16 appearances for the east London club.
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] and [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] this summer but Sullivan admitted they will now be forced to bring in another striker.
"We have to bring in another striker and we’re working on it now to buy one, or loan one, or both," the Hammers chief told the Sports Bar.
"You can never have enough strikers and really with Andy gone we haven’t got enough."
Last season Carroll did not make his first appearance for Hammers until January and Sullivan confessed the club had erred in investing everything in the striker.
"It was desperate last year... We probably made a mistake by putting all our eggs in one basket," the co-owner added.
"Had we known what we know now we wouldn't have signed the player. But it's easy to be wise after the event. We were assured by our physio - who has since left the club - that the player would be available for the start of the season.
"He wasn't available until January or February. A mistake was made and we were given the wrong information. We based our decision and our purchase of the player on what the medical department told us.
"We've changed everything in that department as a result of that. At the same time on his day he is a devastating and fantastic player, we've just got to get him back to his best.
"But at the same time we can't start the season with the strikeforce we've got. I don't think it's good enough, there's not enough height in it and if we get another injury, in terms of quantity, it's insufficient, so we have to sign at least one more player."

well the good thing is... they fired the person responsible last time round.

question is... who carries the can for wasting all that money on a plane ticket to the other side of the world for a player who wasn't even able to lace up his boots without fupping his ankle...

Just been discussing with my little man about next season starting without Carroll.
Jack said he wants to go with Zarate and Valencia upfront.
No chance of the fat one going with no height and no place for Nolan with two up top.
So who is he going to bring in with height in place of our resident sick note ?
Personally I think they will bring in no one and start with Nolan playing off Carlton Cole.

    long season ahead Sad

completely agree with all that mate, what i can't believe is some of the hatred being poured onto carroll on various west ham sites i pop into on FB. you'd think he inured himself on purpose or personally made sam pump long balls to him. i'm sure carroll wants to be fit and scoring and receiving more then long diagonal balls himself.

what to do about the situation, i don't know. i do feel its barely worth selling him, his resell fee would be shit, but then it would save wages. maybe loan him out for a while and give him a couple of months to get fit and confident.

who would take him on loan?

he can't play for them and who'd pay 100grand a week for someone to sit in their sick room? oh right... we would.

I agree with you about the hatred and vitriol on FB and other places... seems more than a few are alleging some kind of substance abuse problem being behind everything... which is kinda bizarre... and hopefully untrue.

I doubt Carroll or any other player - even Dyer - really wants to spend their career sitting in the doctor's office... but the cold hard reality is that we need players on the pitch who can and want to play for us.
Players that can do a job when called upon (which rules out Carlton Cole Smile

So what do you do with a player like Carroll? On his day he can be awesome... but 15m just to take a squad number and sit in the stands isn't an option.

what sucks the most is our seeming inability to do anything different.

I mean, we played (gawd help us) Carlton Cole up front on his own yesterday against Sydney... and guess what... we looked awful. So eventually we took Cole off... and put Zarate on... and played EXACTLY THE SAME formation and style... with EXACTLY THE SAME result.

Sydney played us off the park at times... a shitty Aussie team in the middle of their off season...

I can't believe even the average players we have are playing this poorly.

It almost seems like it's deliberate.

I mean, seriously... can Winston Reid really have been happy with going back home with his team, being made captain and having to 'lead' that shower of shite?

Surely if true we can do a 'random' drug test, rip up his contract and sue the player like Chelsea did with Adrian mutu
